12 Golden Rules of Goal Setting
Put these rules in context by reading my article on the Nottingham Post www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/jobs “How confident are you in your search for a new job”
- Ensure they are compatible with your values
Goals have to be in line with your values otherwise it’s unlikely you’ll find the motivation to achieve them
- Write them down
Writing your goals down turns them from a dream into a solid idea, something which can be developed and reviewed. Writing a goal down allows you to elaborate, making the idea that more real!
- Review goals regularly
Sometimes circumstances change and as a result, so does the goal. However, if you review and update your goal regularly you are constantly reminding yourself what it is you’re striving to achieve, boosting the motivation and potential for carrying out your actions
- Make them specific
Goals need to be specific so you can measure them. You need to understand exactly what it is you are working towards achieving
- set them in the positive
Goals must be striving towards something positive. For example, a positive career goal would be “working in a vibrant environment where my skills and personality are valued and utilised with integrity”
- capture them in the imagination
If you can’t imagine how it will feel to be doing the things or achieving the things you are goal setting you’ll battle to find the motivation to complete your actions. Really take time to sit back and imagine what life will be like when you’ve done it
- Make them measurable
If you can’t measure the goal you’ll never know when you’ve succeeded. It’s essential you identify what a measure of achievement is for your goal
- Make them challenging
If it’s not challenging you won’t find the motivation to do it. The challenge brings the excitement which drives you forward
- Make them achievable
Don’t make it so challenging that you’ll never achieve it however! The goal needs to be realistic with achievable milestones.
- Set them within a time-frame
To keep up the activity and motivation you need to be working within a set time-frame. Ensure you give yourself enough time to complete your actions and review regularly – it’s possible you could get it done before you anticipated!
- Set them in all areas of life
Your goal shouldn’t cause an imbalance in your life. This means one part of your life shouldn’t suffer for another!
- Make them legal and ethical
This speaks for itself!
