5 steps to getting a foot on the graduate career ladder

It’s that time of year again! Graduates are hitting the job market with gusto in hope of securing a decent job.  After meeting with a graduate client, it reminded me just how important a few key steps are in helping graduates get a foot on the career ladder.

Step 1: Get your CV working for you. This sounds obvious, but careful not to just list previous jobs or the name of your qualification. Think about all the skills you’ve developed over your time at college, university, work experience, voluntary work and part time jobs to help shape a comprehensive picture of what you can offer a future employer. Pull out the skills and provide examples of how you have demonstrated them. Don’t forget to include achievements and awards gathered over your life time – they highlight your strengths such as commitment and confidence!

Step 2: Make a decision on the type of job you’ll be targeting and the type of employer you want to work for. Keeping focused will ensure all effort and proactivity is geared in the right direction. Having a number of CVs for different job types dilutes your efforts and takes you off course from your desired career.

Step3: Identify your network and use it to your advantage.  Your network can help open doors to interesting companies, influential people and potential vacancies. Ensure you have social media accounts up to date and professional, using platforms such as Linked in and Twitter to raise your profile and connect with key people and organisations.

Step 4: Put a plan in place. Job hunting takes time and effort. Creating a plan for the month ahead will ensure you remain focused. It will also allow you to reflect on your progress which is essential for keeping the confidence levels on a high.

Step 5: prepare, prepare, prepare! When you’re fortunate enough to be offered an interview don’t leave your success in the hands of fate! You’re in competition with other hungry graduates so ensuring you have clearly matched the job role to your experience, qualifications and skill set and rehearsed a variety of responses will help you stand out from the crowd!

Job hunting is a stressful activity but by following these 5 steps you can ensure you remain in control of your progress which will boost your success rate! If you’re finding it hard to remain focused or get a plan in place, please do get in contact for advice penny@pennystrutton.co.uk .
