Is a Career Coach Right For You?

Not everyone looking for a new job or career necessarily needs a coach. However, if you find the prospect of doing either a little daunting, help from a professional will give you focus, boost your self-belief and help you achieve your goals a whole lot faster than working alone.

Over my time as a career coach I have worked with a whole array of people with different backgrounds and different goals. Clients approach me for many reasons;  some feel they have become stagnated in their current role, some find themselves cruising from one role to another without any focus on where their career is heading and others have been made redundant and don’t know what they’re capable of doing next . Although different, there is one common thread which links all my clients – lack of confidence and personal awareness.

If self-belief is at a low, working alone to find a new job or career can be even more difficult. The job search process is lengthy and anyone looking for a new job will receive knock backs, rejection and disappointment. Having a strategy to manage the emotion and maintain commitment is essential, but hard to design and implement alone.

For this reason, the first priority in the coaching process is to conduct a skills review and a personal analysis. This helps reconnect people with their skills, strengths and achievements and starts the journey of boosting self- confidence and personal belief.  Once people start believing in their potential they can gain the confidence to begin networking, approaching organisations, making applications and attending interview.

Having a career coach means you’re being held accountable. That means if you decide you want a new job or career and invest money in a coach, I won’t let you slip on actions and commitments, encouraging you every step of the way to overcome obstacles, develop a job search routine and stick to it, celebrate successes and try new approaches. Most importantly, I’ll be there to remind you of your skills and support you along the journey to achieve your goals.

If you’re serious about making a change, you can do it alone, but investing in a coach means you’ll be far more likely to make a change in line with your career aspirations which will genuinely allow you to achieve your career plan in the long term.
